Barcelona in December

Not the best time

December wraps Barcelona in Christmas magic, but you'll trade sunshine for festive atmosphere. The weather can be dreary, but holiday markets and seasonal decorations transform the Gothic Quarter into something special.

Weather

December brings cool, often cloudy weather with frequent drizzle that can last for days. Temperatures rarely climb above 16°C and the sun makes only brief appearances. Humidity stays high, making it feel colder than thermometer readings suggest.

Events & Festivals

  • Christmas markets throughout the city
  • Fira de Santa Llúcia (Cathedral Christmas market)
  • New Year's Eve celebrations at Plaça Catalunya

December Tips

  • Christmas markets add charm but also crowds, especially weekends in Ciutat Vella
  • Many restaurants close between Christmas and New Year - make reservations early
  • Pack warm, waterproof clothing - December dampness cuts right through light jackets

All Months

April through June is peak season for good reason. The weather hits that sweet spot — warm enough for beaches (20-25°C) but not the crushing heat of summer. Easter week gets busy, but the rest of spring feels manageable. September and October might be even better. The crowds thin out after school starts, but the Mediterranean stays warm enough for swimming through October. September averages 24°C and you'll get those golden hour shots without fighting for space. Summer (July-August) is intense. Temperatures hit 30°C regularly, humidity climbs, and half the city empties out for vacation. But the beach clubs are in full swing, and the late sunsets (9:30pm in June) are magical. Just book everything in advance. Winter isn't terrible — 15°C and sunny most days — but many beach restaurants close, and some attractions have shorter hours. The upside? Hotel prices drop by half, and you'll have the Gothic Quarter mostly to yourself. Avoid the first week of August if possible. That's when Barcelona essentially shuts down for summer holidays. Many restaurants close, and the ones that stay open jack up prices.
