Bavaria in December
Not the best time
December isn't ideal for Bavaria. Consider a different month.
All Months
May through October gives you the best weather, but each month has its personality. May means fewer crowds and wildflowers blooming in Alpine meadows, but some high-altitude hiking trails stay snow-covered. June and July are peak hiking season — long days, warm weather, and all cable cars running. But hotel prices jump 30-40% and popular spots like Neuschwanstein get packed. August brings festival season, including smaller local celebrations that feel more authentic than Oktoberfest. September might be Bavaria's sweet spot. The weather stays warm, crowds thin out after German school holidays end, and fall colors start appearing in the Alps. October means Oktoberfest (which actually runs mid-September to early October) and beautiful autumn hiking. But mountain weather becomes unpredictable. Winter transforms Bavaria into a Christmas market wonderland, especially Nuremberg's Christkindlmärkte. Skiing is excellent from December through March, and hotel rates drop significantly outside of Christmas week.
