Byron Bay

Byron Bay in August

Not the best time

Still winter but with the added bonus of incredible whale watching. Prices remain rock bottom and crowds are thin. Worth it if you're more interested in nature than beach parties.

Weather

August continues winter's cool, dry pattern with sunny days and cold nights. Morning frost is common in the hinterland. The weather remains stable with minimal rainfall throughout the month.

August Tips

  • Best whale watching month as humpbacks migrate north
  • Rock bottom accommodation prices
  • Sunrise at the lighthouse is spectacular but dress warmly

All Months

March through May offers perfect beach weather without the summer crowds – water temps stay around 24°C and accommodation prices drop 30%. September to November brings whale watching season and spring wildflowers, though book early for Splendour in the Grass festival in July. Summer (December-February) means 30°C days, packed beaches, and prices that'll make you wince – a basic hotel room hits $250 per night. Winter (June-August) sees 20°C days perfect for hiking, but the water's too cold for swimming unless you're hardcore. Avoid schoolies week in November when 18-year-olds descend for graduation celebrations. Rain can hit any time, but it usually passes quickly. Pack layers – Byron's weather changes faster than the local gossip.
