Central Iowa in August

Great time to visit

August is one of the best months to visit Central Iowa.

All Months

Late August means Iowa State Fair, the region's crown jewel event that transforms Des Moines into carnival central. Book accommodations six months ahead or you'll sleep in Nebraska. Summer brings perfect weather for exploring covered bridges and small-town festivals, but also humidity that makes you understand why Iowans invented air conditioning. Fall delivers spectacular colors along the Des Moines River and comfortable temperatures for outdoor adventures. Spring can be muddy and unpredictable — farmers call it 'mud season' for good reason. Winter? Only if you love cross-country skiing and ice fishing. The sweet spot runs May through September, with July and August offering the warmest weather and most festivals.
