All Months
April through June offers the sweet spot — wildflowers bloom across the islands, creating carpets of color that rival any botanical garden. Coreopsis flowers turn entire hillsides bright yellow, while morning fog keeps temperatures comfortable for hiking. But spring also brings unpredictable weather. Pack layers.
September and October provide the most reliable conditions. Winds calm down, water temperatures peak (though still chilly), and you'll avoid summer crowds. This is prime time for camping, with clear skies and mild temperatures perfect for sleeping under stars you can actually see.
Winter brings gray whales migrating south, making it excellent for wildlife viewing from the boat. But island conditions turn harsh — expect wind, rain, and rough seas that can cancel trips with little notice. Summer sees the most visitors but also the most fog, which can shroud islands for days and make boat rides miserable.
