Cologne in May

Great time to visit

May hits the sweet spot - gorgeous weather, everything's open, and the city buzzes with energy. Expect crowds and higher prices, but it's worth dealing with both for these conditions.

Weather

May brings proper spring weather that makes you understand why everyone loves Europe in late spring. Warm days, cool evenings, and rain that mostly stays polite. Humidity sits comfortably around 60%, perfect for wandering the Altstadt without melting or freezing.

May Tips

  • Book accommodation well ahead - May is prime tourist season
  • Perfect weather for Rhine river cruises
  • Museum Night offers access to 40+ venues for one ticket

All Months

April through October gives you the best weather and outdoor beer garden season. Summer means Rhine riverbank parties and open-air concerts. But here's the thing — Cologne's famous for its Christmas markets from late November through December. Five different markets, including the one in front of the cathedral that looks like a fairy tale. February brings Karneval, the city's biggest party. Book hotels months ahead and prepare for complete mayhem. Rosenmontag (Rose Monday) sees a million people flood the streets for the parade. Spring and fall offer perfect walking weather and fewer crowds. Winter can be gray and damp, but museum season keeps things interesting.
