All Months
March to May brings clear mountain views and blooming rhododendrons. Temperatures hover around 15-20°C during the day, perfect for walking around. This is peak tourist season though, so book accommodation early and expect crowds at Tiger Hill.
October and November offer the clearest Himalayan views of the year. Post-monsoon skies mean you'll actually see Kanchenjunga most mornings. Weather stays pleasant at 10-18°C, and tourist numbers drop after Durga Puja.
Avoid June through September unless you enjoy monsoon mist that blocks all mountain views. The toy train often stops running, roads get slippery, and you'll spend more time indoors than exploring tea gardens.
December through February gets cold – think 2-8°C – but also brings fewer tourists and lower hotel rates. Pack warm clothes and you might catch snow on the peaks.
