Florence in August
Not the best time
The year's most challenging month for visitors, with heat that drives everyone indoors during peak hours. Many locals flee the city, leaving it to tourists who brave the furnace-like conditions.
Weather
August continues July's heat assault with temperatures that make walking the cobblestones feel like a furnace. Humidity peaks and the air becomes still, trapping heat between the narrow medieval streets. When thunderstorms finally arrive, they're brief but intense.

All Months
April through June is Florence's sweet spot. Temperatures hover around 70°F, museum crowds are manageable, and restaurant terraces reopen. May brings perfect weather and longer days, though hotel prices start climbing.
September and October offer the best combination of pleasant weather and fewer tourists. The summer heat breaks, but temperatures stay warm enough for evening strolls along the Arno. Restaurant prices drop back to normal after the August tourist exodus.
Avoid July and August unless you enjoy 90°F heat and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds at the Uffizi. Many local restaurants close for vacation, and the city feels overrun with tour groups. If you must visit in summer, book museum tickets months in advance and plan indoor activities during midday heat.
Winter brings its own charm — fewer crowds, cozy wine bars, and hotel deals. But many attractions have shorter hours, and rain can disrupt outdoor plans. The Christmas markets around Piazza Santa Croce add festive atmosphere, though temperatures rarely drop below 40°F.
