Franz Josef in August
Not the best time
August tests your tolerance for cold, wet weather but rewards you with empty streets and incredibly cheap prices. This is for hardcore budget travelers only.
Weather
The coldest month with highs struggling to reach 8°C and nights frequently dropping below freezing. Rain mixes with snow and sleet, creating slushy, miserable conditions. Gray skies dominate for weeks at a time.

August Tips
- •Rock-bottom accommodation prices if you can handle the weather
- •Thermal underwear isn't optional - you'll be genuinely cold
- •Many outdoor attractions and tours shut down completely
All Months
December through March gives you the longest days and clearest skies for helicopter flights. But here's the reality: weather changes every 20 minutes on the West Coast. I've seen perfect blue skies turn into horizontal rain in the time it takes to order coffee. January and February are peak season, which means higher prices and booked-out helicopter rides. March offers the sweet spot — fewer crowds but still decent weather. Winter (June-August) brings snow to the mountains, creating spectacular scenery, but helicopter flights get cancelled more often. The village basically hibernates from May to September, with some restaurants closing entirely.
