Freetown in August
Not the best time
Another brutal wet season month with relentless rain and humidity. The few tourists who brave these conditions find deserted attractions but must cope with flooding, power cuts, and transportation delays.
Weather
August continues the intense wet season pattern with heavy rainfall and crushing humidity. The brief dry spells become even shorter, and standing water creates perfect mosquito breeding conditions. Temperatures stay moderate but feel much hotter due to moisture.

August Tips
- •Malaria prevention is absolutely critical this month
- •Pack multiple changes of clothes as nothing stays dry
- •Some ferries to nearby islands suspend service
All Months
November through April is dry season — your best window. Temperatures hover around 85°F, humidity drops, and rain's rare. December and January are peak months when diaspora Sierra Leoneans return for holidays, so book accommodations early.
March and April get hot and dusty as Harmattan winds blow in from the Sahara. But crowds thin out and prices drop.
May through October brings heavy rains that flood streets and shut down parts of the city. Some travelers love the dramatic thunderstorms and lush green landscape, but getting around becomes a real challenge. Many roads become impassable, and power outages increase.
If you do visit during rainy season, bring waterproof everything and expect to spend more time indoors.
