May Tips

  • Book accommodations 2-3 months ahead as this is shoulder season
  • Bring a wetsuit for snorkeling - water starts cooling down
  • Early morning wildlife tours offer the best lighting and animal activity

All Months

The Galápagos straddle the equator, so temperatures stay consistent year-round – 70-85°F. But wildlife activity changes dramatically with the seasons. June through November brings cooler, drier weather and rougher seas. This is when penguins and fur seals are most active, and whale watching peaks. December through May offers warmer water, calmer seas, and better snorkeling conditions. Green sea turtles nest during this period, and marine iguanas show off their breeding colors. Here's the trade-off: dry season means clearer skies but choppier boat rides. Wet season brings afternoon showers but better underwater visibility. Avoid March and April if you're prone to seasickness – that's when swells are biggest. Book accommodations 6-12 months ahead regardless of when you visit.
