Gauteng in February
Not the best time
February isn't ideal for Gauteng. Consider a different month.
All Months
March through May delivers Gauteng's sweet spot. The summer rains have stopped, temperatures hover around 20°C, and the jacaranda trees turn Pretoria purple in October. This is hiking weather, outdoor market weather, rooftop bar weather.
Winter (June through August) brings crisp mornings and sunny afternoons. You'll need a jacket for early morning game drives at nearby reserves, but by lunch you're back in t-shirts. The air quality improves dramatically once the summer thunderstorms wash away the highveld dust.
September through November sees the province wake up from winter. The jacarandas bloom in October, turning Pretoria's streets into purple tunnels. But this is also peak conference season — hotel prices spike and restaurants book solid.
Avoid December and January if possible. Summer thunderstorms hit most afternoons, humidity climbs, and half the city disappears to the coast for holidays. Plus, the afternoon storms can be genuinely dramatic — the kind that flood underpasses and knock out power.
