Guangzhou in September

Good time to visit

Marginally better than summer peak but still quite uncomfortable for most travelers. Wait another month if you can.

Weather

September shows the first hints of autumn with temperatures dropping slightly to around 31°C. Humidity begins its slow decline to 80-85% but still feels oppressive. Rain decreases compared to peak summer but afternoon showers remain common.

All Months

October through April gives you the best weather. Temperatures hover around 15-25°C, humidity drops, and you can actually walk outside without melting. Winter months (December-February) are ideal for food tours. Cool weather makes hot soup noodles and steaming dim sum even more appealing. Just pack layers – buildings aren't always heated. Spring brings occasional rain but also the best produce. Markets overflow with fresh lychees, longans, and seasonal vegetables that make Cantonese cooking shine. Avoid May through September unless you love heat and humidity. Summers hit 35°C with 90% humidity, and the city becomes one giant sauna. Air conditioning bills skyrocket and outdoor exploration becomes miserable. Chinese New Year (usually February) transforms the city. Many restaurants close, but the ones that stay open serve special holiday dishes. Hotels get expensive and crowded.
