Harbin in November

Not the best time

The transition back to winter brings cold, gray days without the compensating beauty of full snow cover. Skip this month unless you enjoy moody, pre-winter atmospheres.

Weather

November marks winter's return with temperatures plunging toward freezing and the first snowfalls arriving. Days rarely exceed 5°C and nights drop well below zero, while rain transitions to sleet and snow. The gray, overcast skies can feel depressing.

November Tips

  • Pack winter gear as weather turns harsh quickly
  • Many outdoor attractions begin closing for winter maintenance
  • Hotel heating may not be fully operational early in the month

All Months

Winter is when Harbin truly shines, despite temperatures that can hit -30°C. The Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival runs from early January through February, transforming the city into a frozen wonderland. Ice and Snow World opens around Christmas and features massive ice sculptures lit up in neon colors. But pack serious winter gear – we're talking thermal underwear, down jackets, and waterproof boots. Summer (June through August) offers a completely different Harbin experience. Temperatures hover around 25°C, making it a popular escape for Chinese tourists fleeing the southern heat. The Russian architecture looks stunning against green trees, and outdoor beer gardens come alive. Spring and fall are brief transition seasons with unpredictable weather. Avoid May and September if you can – the weather can't decide what it wants to be.
