December transforms Helsinki into a winter wonderland that actually works. The Christmas markets at Senate Square sell glögi (mulled wine) and gingerbread while snow covers the city in Instagram-worthy white. Temperatures hover around freezing, cold enough for atmosphere but not so brutal you'll hide indoors. May and September offer the best deals and fewer crowds. You'll miss some of the summer magic, but restaurants still have outdoor seating and the Northern Lights sometimes make appearances in September. Plus, hotel prices drop by 30-40%.
