Heraklion in July

Not the best time

July is when Heraklion becomes a beautiful nightmare - stunning weather and endless sunshine, but also crushing crowds and prices that'll make you check your bank account twice. The locals have the right idea: beach in the morning, siesta until evening.

Weather

July unleashes full Mediterranean summer intensity with blazing sunshine, zero rainfall, and temperatures that make midday exploration brutal. The saving grace is consistent meltemi winds that provide relief, especially near the coast. Humidity drops to around 50%, making the heat more bearable than it sounds.

July Tips

  • Plan indoor activities (museums, air-conditioned restaurants) for 11 AM to 5 PM
  • Book everything months in advance - hotels, restaurants, even beach umbrellas
  • Consider staying in Chania or smaller towns and day-tripping to Heraklion

All Months

April through June gives you the best weather without the summer crowds. Temperatures sit comfortably between 20-25°C, the sea warms up enough for swimming by May, and hotel prices stay reasonable. Easter week gets busy with Greek families, but the atmosphere becomes festive rather than overwhelming. September and October extend the sweet spot. The sea reaches its warmest temperatures, the summer heat breaks, and restaurant terraces become pleasant again for evening meals. October can bring occasional rain, but it usually clears quickly. July and August bring 35°C heat and cruise ship crowds that pack the archaeological sites by 9 AM. If you're coming in summer, plan indoor activities for midday and save the beach time for early morning or late afternoon. Hotel prices double, and reservations become essential. Winter sees most tourist restaurants close, but local life continues. Temperatures rarely drop below 10°C, and you'll have the museums and ancient sites mostly to yourself. The tradeoff: shorter days and choppy seas that make beach time unlikely.
