Idaho Falls in October

Good time to visit

October offers beautiful fall weather and smaller crowds, but you're racing against the calendar as winter approaches. Great month for outdoor activities before the snow flies.

Weather

October serves up classic fall weather with crisp, sunny days and cold nights that hint at winter's approach. The first frost usually hits mid-month, and you'll see more cloudy days mixed with brilliant sunshine. Rain becomes more frequent but snow stays away until month's end.

All Months

Summer is Idaho Falls' sweet spot. June through September brings warm days, minimal rain, and full access to outdoor activities. July and August see temperatures in the 80s with cool evenings perfect for riverside walks. This is also peak season for Yellowstone access, though you'll share the roads with plenty of other visitors. September might be the secret best month. Crowds thin out, temperatures stay comfortable in the 70s, and fall colors start showing in the surrounding mountains. Hotel rates drop 20-30% after Labor Day. Winter transforms the area into a snow sports playground. Kelly Canyon Ski Area, 30 minutes northeast, offers affordable skiing with lift tickets around $45. The city itself stays relatively mild thanks to the river, but pack layers - morning temps can hit single digits while afternoons warm to the 30s. Avoid late March through early May unless you enjoy mud season. Snowmelt creates soggy conditions, many trails remain inaccessible, and it's too early for most summer activities but too late for winter sports.
