Indianapolis in January

Not the best time

January in Indy is rough - bone-chilling cold and limited outdoor activities. But hotel prices drop dramatically and you'll have attractions mostly to yourself.

Weather

January hits hard with freezing temperatures and biting winds that cut through downtown streets. Snow is common but not constant - expect a few decent snowfalls mixed with gray, slushy days. Indoor heating bills spike for a reason.

January Tips

  • Pack serious winter gear - the wind chill around Monument Circle is brutal
  • Hotels are cheapest now, but many downtown restaurants have reduced hours
  • The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is a perfect indoor escape

All Months

May brings the Indianapolis 500, which transforms the city but also crowds hotels and raises prices. Book accommodations months ahead if you're coming race weekend. The weather's perfect - mid-70s and sunny most days. Summer (June through August) offers the best weather for walking the Cultural Trail and outdoor events. The Indiana State Fair runs in August with deep-fried everything and live music. Temperatures hit the mid-80s with humidity that's noticeable but not oppressive. Fall delivers gorgeous weather and fewer crowds. September and October see highs in the 70s with crisp mornings perfect for exploring. The leaves change color in nearby Brown County State Park. Winter gets cold and gray, but hotel rates drop significantly. The city decorates Monument Circle with lights, and you'll have museums mostly to yourself. Pack layers - temperatures swing from 20s to 40s.
