Great time to visit

September is one of the best months to visit Innere Stadt (1st District).

All Months

May and September offer the sweet spot - warm enough for outdoor dining, cool enough to walk comfortably. The chestnut trees along the Ring bloom in late April, creating natural canopies over the sidewalks. But expect crowds during these peak months. Winter has its own magic. Christmas markets fill Stephansplatz and Am Hof from late November through December. The mulled wine tastes better when snow dusts the cathedral spires. Hotels drop prices 30% in January and February, though some restaurants close for vacation. Summer gets hot and sticky. July temperatures hit 30°C, and the stone buildings trap heat. But the outdoor opera season at Staatsoper runs June through August - worth sweating for. Book tickets early; good seats sell out in March. Avoid Easter week if you hate crowds. The entire Catholic world seems to visit Stephansdom during Holy Week. October brings perfect weather and fewer tourists, though rain becomes more frequent.
