Jasper in February

Not the best time

February offers marginally less miserable weather than January. Still deep winter, but you might catch a Chinook wind that reminds you spring exists somewhere.

Weather

February stays brutally cold with little relief from January's freeze. Snow continues to pile up and the sun barely makes a dent in the ice. Chinook winds occasionally provide brief warm spells that feel like miracles.

February Tips

  • Maligne Lake Road closes to vehicles - snowshoe or cross-country ski only
  • Indoor attractions like the Planetarium become essential
  • February is actually slightly warmer than January if you're picking between winter months

All Months

Summer hits differently in Jasper. June through September brings 18-hour days and temperatures that actually let you enjoy being outside. July and August see crowds, but they're nothing compared to Banff's zoo-like atmosphere. September is the secret weapon month. Tourists head home, aspen leaves turn golden, and elk start their mating season – which means incredible wildlife viewing along the Athabasca River. Plus, September nights get dark enough for serious stargazing by 9 PM. Winter transforms Jasper into something magical but challenging. The Dark Sky Preserve really shines from December to March – literally. Northern lights peak in February and March, dancing over snow-covered peaks. But temperatures drop to -30°C, and daylight lasts maybe 7 hours. Here's the catch: shoulder seasons (April-May, October-November) mean unpredictable weather and limited services. Many restaurants and attractions close. But if you don't mind uncertainty, October offers stunning fall colors without summer's price tags.
