Kings Beach in May

Not the best time

May sits in an awkward transition period at Kings Beach. Too cold for proper summer fun but without winter's reliable snow activities either.

Weather

May brings warmer days but the lake remains chilly for swimming. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, bringing heavy rain that can disrupt outdoor plans. Mornings often start clear before clouds build throughout the day.

Events & Festivals

  • Memorial Day weekend marks unofficial summer season start
  • Wildflower blooms in nearby meadows

May Tips

  • Bring rain gear for those surprise afternoon storms
  • Lake water is still too cold - wetsuit recommended for water activities
  • Many summer businesses reopen this month but with limited schedules

All Months

Summer is peak family season for obvious reasons – the lake actually feels swimmable, the beach buzzes with activity, and everything stays open. July and August bring the warmest water temperatures, around 68-70 degrees, which still requires some mental preparation but won't send you into shock. June can be hit or miss with weather, and September offers the sweet spot of warm days, fewer crowds, and lower accommodation prices. Winter transforms Kings Beach into a different animal entirely. The town goes quiet, but you're 20 minutes from Northstar ski resort and the lake views under snow are legitimately stunning. Just know that many restaurants close or cut hours significantly from November through April.
