All Months
March through August offers the driest weather, but "dry" is relative in Borneo. You'll still get afternoon thunderstorms, especially during the transition months. The rain usually lasts 30-60 minutes, then the sun comes out again.
April and May are ideal — less rain, manageable heat, and the jungle is lush without being muddy. Wildlife is more active during these months too. Orangutans at Semenggoh are easier to spot when wild fruit is scarce.
June through August brings more tourists, especially European families on summer holidays. Book accommodations early and expect higher prices at tour operators.
Avoid September through February if possible. The northeast monsoon dumps serious rain, and some national parks close sections due to flooding. But if you do come during wet season, embrace it — waterfalls are at their most dramatic, and hotel rates drop by 30-40%.
The Rainforest World Music Festival in July draws thousands of visitors. Book everything months in advance if you're planning around this event.
