Kyiv in December

Not the best time

December brings festive holiday atmosphere but serious cold. Christmas markets and New Year preparations add sparkle, but you'll need to bundle up to enjoy them.

Weather

Winter arrives with freezing temperatures and occasional snow. Days are short with limited sunlight. Dry cold is more tolerable than wet November, and holiday decorations brighten dark streets.

December Tips

  • Winter gear is non-negotiable
  • Holiday markets add charm to the cold season
  • Book New Year's Eve dining well ahead

All Months

Late spring through early fall gives you the best weather and longest days. May brings cherry blossoms to Shevchenko Park and comfortable temperatures for walking the cobblestone streets of Podil. Summer can get sticky — July temperatures hit the high 20s Celsius — but the city's parks and outdoor beer gardens come alive. September might be perfect. The tourist crowds thin out, leaves start turning golden around the monastery grounds, and you get that crisp autumn light that makes the golden domes glow. Hotel prices drop after the summer peak too. Winter transforms the city into something from a Russian novel, but you'll need serious cold-weather gear. January temperatures regularly drop below -5°C, and snow can make the cobblestone streets treacherous. But if you can handle the cold, you'll have the major sights mostly to yourself. Avoid March and early April unless you enjoy mud season. The snow melts, but spring hasn't quite arrived, leaving the city looking gray and soggy.
