The weather stays comfortable for walking, and crowds thin out compared to spring madness. March through May offers the best weather balance. Temperatures hover around 15-20°C, perfect for temple hopping. Rain comes frequently in early spring, so pack an umbrella and waterproof shoes. Summer brings intense humidity and temperatures reaching 35°C. But early mornings at temples like Fushimi Inari feel almost mystical in the mist. Plus, summer brings Gion Matsuri — Kyoto's most famous festival running through July. Winter sees fewer tourists and occasional snow dusting temple roofs. Indoor attractions like museums and tea houses become more appealing. Many gardens close early, but the ones that stay open offer serene, almost empty experiences. Avoid Golden Week (late April-early May) and Obon (mid-August) when domestic tourists flood the city. Hotel prices spike and popular temples become uncomfortably crowded.
