La Fortuna in January
Great time to visit
January is La Fortuna at its absolute best - clear Arenal views, zero mud, and perfect hiking weather. You'll pay peak prices and battle crowds, but those volcano photos will be worth it.
Weather
January brings La Fortuna's peak dry season with almost zero rainfall and crisp mountain air. Mornings start cool around 16°C, perfect for volcano hikes, while afternoons hit a comfortable 27°C. Humidity drops to its lowest levels of the year.

- •Start volcano hikes early (6 AM) before clouds roll in
- •Pack layers - mornings are surprisingly cool
All Months
December through April gives you the clearest volcano views and the least rain. But here's what the brochures don't tell you: dry season also means dust, higher prices, and crowds at every waterfall. January and February are peak season — book accommodations months ahead or pay premium rates.
May through November brings afternoon rains, but mornings are often crystal clear. You'll get better photos of Arenal Volcano at 7 AM in July than at noon in February. Plus, everything costs 30% less, and you won't fight for space on the hanging bridges.
The worst time? September and October. Too much rain, even for Costa Rica. Rivers run high and muddy, some tours get canceled, and you'll spend more time indoors than anyone wants on a volcano adventure.
