September Tips

  • Pack layers - temperature swings are dramatic
  • Early fall colors appear on the highest peaks
  • Great month for hiking without summer crowds

All Months

July and August bring perfect hiking weather and warm lake temperatures, but also crowds that turn Main Street into a slow-moving parade. Book accommodations three months ahead or pay premium rates for whatever's left. Winter — December through February — transforms Lake Placid into its true self. The Olympic Training Center buzzes with activity, Whiteface Mountain delivers reliable snow, and you can actually try bobsledding for $75. But temperatures drop to -20°F some nights, so pack accordingly. Here's the insider move: visit in June or late February. June gives you hiking weather without the summer crowds, and late February offers winter sports with longer days. Fall foliage peaks around October 1st, bringing leaf-peepers by the busload. Spring exists here for about three weeks in April, when everything's muddy and half the trails are closed. Skip it unless you enjoy disappointment.
