Lake Tahoe in March

Not the best time

Shoulder season struggles with unpredictable weather and muddy conditions. Not the best time unless you're chasing end-of-season ski deals.

Weather

March weather can't make up its mind - sunny spring days followed by surprise snowstorms. The snow gets heavier and wetter as temperatures rise, making skiing conditions inconsistent. Expect mud season to begin at lower elevations.

Events & Festivals

  • Mud season hiking trail closures begin

March Tips

  • Skip the hiking - trails turn into muddy messes
  • Late March offers cheaper ski packages as resorts wind down
  • Pack layers for wildly changing weather conditions

All Months

July and August bring 80-degree days and crowds that make parking a nightmare. Lake temperature hits 68 degrees — actually swimmable without a wetsuit. But hotel rates double and you'll spend more time in traffic than on trails. September is the sweet spot. Crowds thin out, temperatures stay in the 70s, and aspen trees turn gold. Lake temperature holds around 65 degrees through early October. This is when locals actually get to enjoy their own backyard. Winter transforms Tahoe into a different destination entirely. Heavenly, Northstar, and Palisades get 300+ inches of snow annually. December through February brings the best powder but also the worst traffic — Interstate 80 turns into a parking lot every weekend. March offers longer days and softer snow.
