Summer means 35°C+ temperatures and tourist hordes. Romans escape to the coast or lakes during August - many restaurants close entirely. If you must visit in summer, start early, rest during afternoon heat, and save sightseeing for evenings. Winter brings rain and shorter days, but also lower prices and empty attractions. Christmas markets fill Rome's piazzas, and thermal baths around Viterbo feel especially appealing. Just pack layers - Roman buildings often lack proper heating.
