All Months
May through October gives you the full Madison experience. The lakes thaw, students fill the terraces, and you can actually enjoy being outside. July and August bring peak summer energy – outdoor concerts at Memorial Union Terrace, farmers markets, and lake activities.
Fall means football season and peak campus energy. September and October offer perfect weather plus the pageantry of Badgers games. Book hotels early for home football weekends – prices triple and availability disappears.
Late spring catches the city waking up. May temperatures hit the 60s, students return from winter hibernation, and restaurant patios reopen. The Crazylegs Classic 8K run in late April signals winter's official end.
Winter isn't impossible, just different. January averages 16 degrees, but locals embrace it with ice fishing on Lake Mendota and cross-country skiing through the university arboretum. The Memorial Union Terrace closes, taking away one of Madison's best features.
Avoid late November through March unless you're here for specific business. The lakes freeze, outdoor dining disappears, and the city loses much of its charm.
