New River Gorge

New River Gorge in September

Great time to visit

September delivers the goods - great weather, fewer families, and the first hints of fall color. One of the year's best months if you can swing the time off work.

Weather

September starts the transition to fall with cooler mornings and comfortable afternoon temperatures. Humidity drops significantly after Labor Day, making outdoor activities much more pleasant. Rain becomes less frequent but when it comes, it's often steady rather than stormy.

September Tips

  • Pack layers - morning temperatures can be 15 degrees cooler than afternoons
  • Climbing conditions become excellent as humidity drops and rock stays dry longer
  • Hotel rates drop after Labor Day but climbing lodges stay busy

All Months

Spring through fall is your window, with each season bringing something different. April and May offer perfect climbing temps in the 60s and 70s, plus the dogwood and redbud trees put on a show. Summer gets hot and humid - think 80s with sticky air - but the water activities become essential. Gauley River rafting season runs September and October when they release water from the dam. Fall climbing is legendary here. September through November brings crisp air, fewer bugs, and those Instagram-worthy leaf colors. Winter? Skip it. Ice makes the rock dangerous and most outfitters shut down. Book accommodations early for October - leaf peepers and climbers create a perfect storm of demand.
