Newport in February
Not the best time
February is Newport's quietest month, perfect if you want the mansions mostly to yourself. But half the town essentially hibernates, so don't expect much nightlife or restaurant variety.
Weather
February continues the winter slog with slightly less bite than January. Snow still falls regularly, and the harbor often has ice formations that make for dramatic photos but miserable walking conditions.

February Tips
- •Valentine's Day weekend brings couples to mansion tours - book ahead if you want the romantic winter castle experience
- •Many B&Bs close entirely in February, limiting accommodation options significantly
- •The White Horse Tavern keeps winter hours but serves excellent chowder to warm up after mansion tours
All Months
May through October gives you the full Newport experience, but each month has its personality. May brings fewer crowds and mansion gardens in bloom, though some restaurants stay closed until Memorial Day.
June and July are peak season for good reason. The weather's perfect, all attractions are open, and the sailing scene is in full swing. But expect crowds at The Breakers and $400+ hotel rates. Book mansion tours online in advance.
August brings the Newport Folk Festival and Jazz Festival, plus the warmest ocean temperatures. The festivals are legendary — Bob Dylan went electric at Folk Fest in 1965 — but they sell out months ahead.
September is the sweet spot. Crowds thin out after Labor Day, but weather stays warm through the month. Restaurant reservations get easier, and you can actually enjoy the Cliff Walk without dodging tour groups.
October offers fall foliage and lower prices, though some seasonal attractions close after Columbus Day. The mansions look spectacular with autumn colors as a backdrop.
