July and August see the heaviest crowds and highest prices – book accommodations months ahead. September offers the sweet spot: fewer crowds, warmer ocean temps, and clear skies for sunset viewing. Winter storms create dramatic wave watching but also road closures and sideways rain. Spring brings wildflower blooms in coastal meadows but unpredictable weather – pack layers always. Whale watching peaks during spring and fall migrations. Gray whales pass by from December through April, while summer brings resident pods of orcas and humpbacks. The ocean stays cold year-round (55-60°F), so serious swimming requires a wetsuit even in summer.
