Porto in August

Good time to visit

August is peak everything - peak heat, peak crowds, peak prices. The weather is reliably gorgeous, but you'll pay for it in packed attractions and strained infrastructure.

Weather

August matches July for heat and dryness. Temperatures consistently hit the high 20s, with the Atlantic breeze providing the only relief. Rain is almost non-existent - maybe 2 days if you're unlucky.

Events & Festivals

  • Festival Internacional de Folclore continues
  • Noites de Bailado no Palácio da Bolsa

August Tips

  • Many locals flee to beach towns, leaving tourist areas even more concentrated with visitors
  • Air conditioning becomes essential - book hotels with AC well in advance
  • Evening river cruises on the Douro offer the best cooling breeze and city views

All Months

April through June gives you the best weather without the crowds. Temperatures hit 20°C by May, perfect for walking those hilly streets. The jacaranda trees bloom purple along the main avenues. September and October are golden months. The summer crowds clear out, but the weather stays warm enough for outdoor dining. Wine harvest season means special tastings at the port lodges. Summer gets hot and crowded. July temperatures can hit 30°C, and every cruise ship in the Atlantic seems to dock here. Hotel prices double, and good luck getting a table at decent restaurants without reservations. Winter isn't terrible if you don't mind rain. January sees about 15 rainy days, but temperatures rarely drop below 5°C. The upside? You'll have the city mostly to yourself, and hotel rates drop by 40%.
