All Months

Two seasons dominate Rovaniemi: dark winter and bright summer. December through February brings polar night — the sun doesn't rise above the horizon. But this creates perfect Northern Lights conditions. Aurora season runs September through March, with peak viewing from 10pm to 2am. January averages -15°C, so pack serious winter gear. Summer flips everything. June through August gives you midnight sun and temperatures around 20°C. This is hiking season, when you can explore Ounasvaara fell or take river cruises without freezing. July brings mosquitoes though — clouds of them. Bring strong repellent. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November) offer compromise weather but fewer activities. Many tour operators close during shoulder seasons. Here's the money question: Christmas week costs double normal rates and books solid by October. If you want the Santa experience without the crowds, visit early December or late January.
