San Salvador in May
Not the best time
The rains arrive in earnest, bringing relief from the heat but also daily downpours. Tourist numbers drop and so do prices, but you'll need to plan around the weather.
Weather
May marks the start of rainy season with temperatures around 32°C and nights at 20°C. Expect heavy afternoon downpours that clear quickly. Humidity jumps significantly, making it feel much hotter than the thermometer shows.

All Months
November through April is dry season – your best window. Temperatures hover around 75-85°F with minimal rain. December and January are peak months when locals take vacation, so book accommodations early. March and April get hotter but still manageable.
May through October brings heavy afternoon rains and humidity. But this isn't necessarily bad. The landscape turns green, waterfalls flow stronger, and hotel prices drop 30%. Just pack an umbrella and plan indoor activities for late afternoons.
Avoid September and October if possible. These months see the heaviest rainfall, and some mountain roads to volcanoes become impassable. Hurricane season also peaks during this period, though direct hits are rare.
Semana Santa (Easter week) shuts down the entire country. Banks, museums, and many restaurants close. But if you're here during this time, you'll witness elaborate religious processions through Centro Histórico.
