Siena in July

Good time to visit

July means the legendary Palio horse race, bringing peak crowds and peak prices to match the peak heat. If you can handle the intensity on all fronts, it's unforgettable. If not, consider other months.

Weather

July delivers Siena's most intense heat with temperatures that make midday exploration genuinely uncomfortable. The sun beats down relentlessly on those medieval stones, which then radiate heat well into the evening. Rain becomes a distant memory - if it falls at all, it's a brief evening thunderstorm.

Events & Festivals

  • Summer festivals throughout the region

July Tips

  • The Palio requires booking accommodations months ahead and prices triple
  • Plan indoor activities during 11am-4pm heat
  • Carry water constantly - dehydration hits fast on those stone streets

All Months

April through June gives you perfect weather without summer crowds. The countryside explodes in green, and restaurant terraces reopen. October offers the same sweet spot — warm days, cool evenings, and the grape harvest in full swing. July 2nd and August 16th mean Palio madness. The city quadruples in size, hotel prices triple, and you'll need reservations months ahead. But witnessing the race is unforgettable — if you can handle the chaos. Winter brings fog and rain, but also solitude. The Duomo's interior glows under artificial light, and you'll have those narrow streets mostly to yourself. Many restaurants close for vacation in January and February.
