South Central Louisiana in January
Great time to visit
January is one of the best months to visit South Central Louisiana.
All Months
October through April offers the sweet spot. Temperatures stay comfortable for outdoor activities, humidity drops to tolerable levels, and festival season kicks into high gear.
Crawfish season (February-June) is non-negotiable if you're serious about food. March and April hit the peak, when mudbugs are fat and plentiful. But summer heat can be brutal - we're talking 95°F with 80% humidity that makes you question your life choices.
Festival season runs October through May. Festival International de Louisiane in April transforms Lafayette into a five-day music party. The World Championship Crawfish Étouffee Cook-Off happens in Eunice each March. Mardi Gras here is more authentic and less chaotic than New Orleans - Mamou's Courir de Mardi Gras is the real deal.
Hurricane season (June-November) can disrupt plans, though this inland region rarely sees direct hits. But tropical systems bring flooding to low-lying areas, especially around the basin.
Winter rarely drops below freezing, making it perfect for swamp tours when bugs are minimal and wildlife is active.
