Southwest Montana in February
Not the best time
February isn't ideal for Southwest Montana. Consider a different month.
All Months
Summer means crowds, but it's also when Southwest Montana truly comes alive. June through September offers the best weather for hiking, fishing, and exploring ghost towns. July and August bring peak tourist season — book accommodations months ahead, especially near Yellowstone.
September might be the sweet spot. Crowds thin out after Labor Day, but weather stays pleasant through most of the month. Aspen trees turn golden in the high country, creating some of the year's best scenery. Plus, elk bugling season begins, offering incredible wildlife viewing opportunities.
Winter transforms the region into snowmobile and skiing territory. Big Sky Resort operates one of America's largest ski areas, while West Yellowstone becomes the snowmobile capital of the world. But many businesses close, and driving becomes treacherous.
Spring arrives late and muddy. April and May see unpredictable weather — blizzards one day, 70-degree sunshine the next. Many backcountry roads remain impassable until June. But if you can handle the uncertainty, you'll have the place mostly to yourself.
