Southwestern Colorado in February

Great time to visit

February is one of the best months to visit Southwestern Colorado.

All Months

Summer delivers peak conditions but also peak crowds. July and August bring warm days perfect for Mesa Verde exploration and high-country hiking. Expect temperatures in the 80s at lower elevations, 60s in the mountains. Book accommodations early – this is prime family vacation season. September might be the sweet spot. Crowds thin out while weather stays excellent. Aspen trees turn golden in the mountains, creating spectacular drives along Highway 550. Mesa Verde remains comfortable for ruin exploration. Winter transforms the region into a snow sports playground. Purgatory Resort near Durango offers downhill skiing, while the San Juan Mountains provide world-class backcountry terrain. Pagosa Springs' hot springs feel especially good after cold mountain days. But some high-elevation roads close, limiting access. Spring comes late and muddy. April and May see snowmelt creating impassable backcountry conditions. Stick to lower elevations or wait until June for reliable mountain access. June works well for avoiding summer crowds while accessing most areas. Wildflowers bloom in mountain meadows, and Mesa Verde opens fully for the season.
