Suzhou in August
Not the best time
Peak summer misery with oppressive heat and humidity that drives away tourists and locals alike. Great prices on everything, but you'll struggle to enjoy outdoor attractions.
Weather
August continues July's heat assault with even higher humidity levels. The air shimmers with heat over canal waters, and walking outdoors feels like entering a steam room. Typhoons occasionally brush the region, bringing heavy rain and slightly cooler temperatures for brief relief.

All Months
Spring (March to May) is peak season for good reason. The gardens explode with color — cherry blossoms in the Humble Administrator's Garden, azaleas in the Lingering Garden. Temperatures hover around 20°C, perfect for walking. But expect crowds and higher hotel prices, especially during Golden Week in early May.
Fall (September to November) might actually be better. The weather stays comfortable through October, autumn leaves create stunning backdrops in the gardens, and you'll have more space to appreciate the scenery. November can be cool, but that just makes the traditional teahouses more appealing.
Summer gets hot and humid — think 35°C with 80% humidity in July and August. The upside? Fewer tourists and lower hotel rates. Early morning garden visits become essential, and you'll appreciate the air-conditioned museums and shopping centers during the heat of the day.
Winter (December to February) is cold but atmospheric. Snow occasionally dusts the traditional rooftops, creating postcard-perfect scenes. Many outdoor food stalls close, but it's an excellent time for indoor activities like silk workshops and museum visits.
