Wakayama in June
Good time to visit
Rainy season brings lower prices and fewer crowds, but constant umbrella duty. The hydrangeas are stunning though, if you don't mind getting damp.
Weather
June marks the start of tsuyu (rainy season) with frequent downpours and rising humidity. Temperatures climb steadily, making the frequent rain actually somewhat welcome. Expect gray, muggy days.

All Months
Spring (March-May) brings cherry blossoms to Mount Koya's temples and comfortable hiking weather for the Kumano Kodo. Temple lodgings book up during Golden Week (late April/early May), so reserve months ahead.
Fall (September-November) offers the best of everything. Autumn colors peak in November on Mount Koya, hot springs feel perfect after cool mountain air, and hiking conditions are ideal. October temperatures hover around 15-20°C.
Summer gets humid and hot in lower elevations, but Mount Koya stays pleasantly cool. This is peak season for temple stays and mountain hiking. Book accommodations early.
Winter brings snow to the mountains and fewer crowds. Some Kumano Kodo trail sections close, but temple stays become more atmospheric with heated floors and warming Buddhist tea ceremonies. Hot springs feel incredible in the cold air.
