Western Nevada in October

Great time to visit

October is one of the best months to visit Western Nevada.

All Months

May through October gives you the best shot at good weather, but each month delivers something different. May means wildflowers in the desert and snow still capping the mountains. Perfect hiking weather, but Lake Tahoe stays too cold for swimming. June and July bring peak season crowds to Tahoe but perfect camping weather everywhere else. Expect 80-degree days and 50-degree nights in the high desert. August gets hot — sometimes hitting 100 degrees in Reno — but the alpine areas stay comfortable. September might be the sweet spot. Crowds thin out, temperatures drop to the 70s, and aspen trees turn gold in the mountains. October offers crisp mornings and stunning fall colors, but snow starts threatening the high passes. Winter transforms the region completely. Tahoe becomes a ski destination, but most ghost towns become inaccessible. Highway 50 stays open year-round, but driving it in January requires serious preparation.
