Almaty in January
Not the best time
January is for winter sports enthusiasts and those who love snowy cityscapes. The cold is no joke, but hotel rates hit rock bottom and you'll have the mountains mostly to yourself.
Weather
January brings Almaty's harshest winter with bone-chilling temperatures and frequent snowfall. Expect thick snow cover throughout the city and surrounding mountains. The air is dry but biting, with occasional blizzards that can shut down mountain roads.

All Months
April through June gives you mild weather and blooming apple trees throughout the city — Almaty means 'father of apples' after all. Temperatures hover around 15-20°C, perfect for mountain hikes. September and October bring crisp air and autumn colors in the surrounding peaks. Winter skiing at Shymbulak runs December through March, but city temperatures drop to -15°C. July and August get uncomfortably hot, often hitting 35°C with little shade downtown. Spring and fall also mean fewer tourists — you'll have Charyn Canyon and Big Almaty Lake mostly to yourself. Book accommodations in advance during Nauryz (March 21-23) when the whole country celebrates the spring equinox.
