Almaty in March
Good time to visit
March brings Nauryz festivities and the promise of spring, but weather remains unpredictable. The city starts coming alive again, though mud season makes walking around less pleasant.
Weather
March marks the beginning of Almaty's gradual thaw, though snow still dominates the landscape. Temperatures creep above freezing during sunny afternoons, creating slushy conditions. Expect dramatic temperature swings between day and night.

All Months
April through June gives you mild weather and blooming apple trees throughout the city — Almaty means 'father of apples' after all. Temperatures hover around 15-20°C, perfect for mountain hikes. September and October bring crisp air and autumn colors in the surrounding peaks. Winter skiing at Shymbulak runs December through March, but city temperatures drop to -15°C. July and August get uncomfortably hot, often hitting 35°C with little shade downtown. Spring and fall also mean fewer tourists — you'll have Charyn Canyon and Big Almaty Lake mostly to yourself. Book accommodations in advance during Nauryz (March 21-23) when the whole country celebrates the spring equinox.
