Bar Harbor in April

Good time to visit

April offers your first real taste of what makes Bar Harbor special without the summer masses. The weather cooperates more often, and you'll have restaurants and attractions largely to yourself.

Weather

April finally feels like spring is possible, though you'll still need a jacket most days. Temperatures become pleasant for walking around town, but expect frequent rain showers. The ocean remains quite cold.

April Tips

  • Many seasonal businesses reopen in April - call the Bar Harbor Chamber for current openings
  • Bring rain gear and layers since weather changes quickly between sun and showers
  • This is prime time for spotting migrating birds in Acadia without summer crowds

All Months

June through October offers the best weather, but each month brings trade-offs. July and August mean warm days perfect for hiking and swimming, but also crowds, higher prices, and traffic jams on Route 3. September is the sweet spot — comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds, and early fall colors starting to show. October brings spectacular foliage but chilly mornings and some businesses closing for the season. June offers wildflowers and reasonable crowds, though ocean water stays frigid. Many restaurants and attractions close from November through April, and while winter has its own stark beauty, Bar Harbor essentially hibernates. The Island Explorer buses only run late June through Columbus Day, which limits your car-free options outside that window.
