Bar Harbor in January
Not the best time
January is brutal and most of the town shuts down completely. Only visit if you want a desolate winter experience and don't mind very limited dining and lodging options.
Weather
January hits Bar Harbor hard with bitter cold and frequent snowstorms. Temperatures hover around freezing most days, with wind chills making it feel much colder. You'll see snow on the ground for weeks at a time.

January Tips
- •Most restaurants and attractions close for the winter - call ahead to confirm anything is open
- •Bring serious winter gear including waterproof boots and layers for wind protection
- •Hotel rates drop to their lowest, but your options are extremely limited
All Months
June through October offers the best weather, but each month brings trade-offs. July and August mean warm days perfect for hiking and swimming, but also crowds, higher prices, and traffic jams on Route 3. September is the sweet spot — comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds, and early fall colors starting to show. October brings spectacular foliage but chilly mornings and some businesses closing for the season. June offers wildflowers and reasonable crowds, though ocean water stays frigid. Many restaurants and attractions close from November through April, and while winter has its own stark beauty, Bar Harbor essentially hibernates. The Island Explorer buses only run late June through Columbus Day, which limits your car-free options outside that window.
