Berat in January

Not the best time

January is Berat's quietest month, perfect if you want the UNESCO sites to yourself. But the cold and rain make exploring less pleasant, and some attractions have reduced hours.

Weather

January brings the coldest temperatures of the year to Berat, with frequent frost in the mornings. Rain comes in heavy bursts followed by crisp, clear days. The Osum River valley can feel particularly damp and chilly.

Events & Festivals

  • Orthodox Christmas (January 7)

January Tips

  • Pack warm layers - many guesthouses have limited heating
  • Restaurant hours are shorter, with some closing entirely
  • The castle area can be slippery when wet - wear good shoes

All Months

April through June gives you perfect weather without the crowds. Temperatures sit around 20-25°C, wildflowers bloom in the castle grounds, and restaurant terraces open for the season. September and October are equally lovely – warm days, cool evenings, and the grape harvest season at local wineries. July and August get hot (30°C+) and bring the most tourists, but evening temperatures are pleasant for wandering the historic streets. Winter can be magical with snow on the castle walls, but many restaurants close and weather is unpredictable. The Osum River sometimes floods in heavy rains, affecting the lower parts of town. Here's the insider tip: visit during Orthodox Easter (dates vary) to see the castle church celebrations, but book accommodation early as Albanian families return home for the holiday.
