Christchurch in May
Good time to visit
Transition into winter with unpredictable weather and shortened daylight. Great for budget travelers but pack warm clothes and have indoor backup plans.
Weather
Winter's approach becomes obvious with short days, regular frosts, and that bone-chilling Canterbury wind. Temperatures struggle to reach double digits most days. Rain picks up to around 10 days, often mixed with hail in the Port Hills.

May Tips
- •Pack serious winter gear - locals joke that May is colder than July
- •Indoor activities become essential - hit the museums and galleries
- •Accommodation prices drop significantly as tourist season ends
All Months
Summer runs from December through February, and this is peak season for good reason. Temperatures hit 20-25°C regularly, perfect for exploring the Port Hills or cycling the city. The Christchurch Arts Festival happens in late February, filling venues across the city with theater, music, and visual arts. But accommodation prices spike during summer, sometimes doubling. Autumn (March-May) offers the best value. Crowds thin out after Easter, hotel rates drop significantly, and the weather stays pleasant through April. The deciduous trees in Hagley Park create stunning displays of red and gold. This is when locals reclaim their city. Winter gets cold – temperatures often drop below 5°C at night, and the Southern Alps get snow that you can see from the city center. But indoor attractions like the Canterbury Museum and Art Gallery are less crowded, and you'll find deals on accommodation. Spring (September-November) brings unpredictable weather. One day you're in shorts, the next you need a jacket. The cherry blossoms in the Botanic Gardens bloom spectacularly in September, but pack layers for sudden weather changes.
