East Nusa Tenggara in August

Great time to visit

August offers the driest conditions of the year but also the highest prices and biggest crowds. The weather couldn't be better for outdoor activities, if you don't mind sharing the experience.

Weather

August maintains the dry season pattern with virtually no rain and temperatures peaking at 36°C. Trade winds remain strong, creating excellent sailing conditions. Low humidity at 55% means sweat evaporates quickly, though you'll need constant hydration.

Events & Festivals

  • Indonesian Independence Day (August 17)
  • Harvest festivals in rural areas
  • Peak whale watching season around Flores

August Tips

  • Start activities before 8am to beat both heat and crowds
  • This is prime whale watching season - book boat tours early
  • Hotel prices peak but weather conditions are absolutely perfect

All Months

April through September offers the sweet spot – dry skies, calm seas, and dragons basking in perfect weather. Peak season hits July and August when European families invade, driving up prices and crowding boat tours. May and September provide the best balance of good weather and smaller crowds. April works too, but occasional rain showers linger from wet season. October through March brings heavy rains that cancel boat trips and turn roads into mud rivers. Dry season also means better diving visibility around Komodo – you'll actually see the manta rays instead of murky water. But temperatures soar, especially on Sumba where shade becomes precious. Book accommodations early for July and August. Many guesthouses close during rainy season, leaving fewer options when weather clears.
