Glastonbury in January

Not the best time

Glastonbury in January is for die-hard pilgrims only. The mystical sites remain, but everything else hibernates until spring.

Weather

January brings proper English winter to Somerset - cold, damp, and gray. Expect temperatures around 7°C during the day, dropping to near-freezing at night. Rain falls on about half the days, often as persistent drizzle that soaks right through your jacket.

January Tips

  • The town feels like a ghost town after the festival crowds - many cafes and shops have reduced hours
  • Pack waterproof boots; the fields around Worthy Farm turn into proper mud baths
  • Stay in nearby Wells or Street for better dining options during winter months

All Months

Glastonbury happens once every few years – usually in late June when the summer solstice energy is still buzzing. The 2026 dates haven't been officially announced, but expect the last weekend of June based on previous patterns. Weather is completely unpredictable. I've seen blazing sun and torrential rain in the same afternoon. The festival takes a fallow year every fifth year to let the land recover, so when tickets go on sale, grab them. They sell out in under an hour. Registration opens months before ticket sales – sign up early. The gates open Wednesday afternoon, and smart festival-goers arrive early to set up camp before the crowds. Sunday night is when the magic really happens – smaller crowds, intimate performances, and that bittersweet feeling of the weekend ending.
